God Wants You To Dance

The closer that I have been getting to God, the more I am realizing how His every command is to get me to enjoy life even more.  The testing and trials that I have been through have been designed very carefully to destroy taboos and hindrances that keep me from enjoying life to its fullness.  Boy, if you get this revelation you are going to find out that the funnest life a person can ever live is one completely given over to God’s perfect will.  There may be some of you, who have been fraught a long time in religion, tradition, that might naturally think (and satan’s propaganda has tried to sell you on) that God only wants you to obey religious rules, hindrances, and so become boring and completely non-creative.  But nothing can be further from the truth. Let me first clarify that what I am about to say is based on the Scripture, “For the blessings of the Lord maketh rich, and He addeth no sorrow with it.” Wow! Wow! Wow! And this scripture is totally true. Let me share with you my own personal experience.

Years ago I read the biography of Ted Turner, the founder of CNN News and many other successful endeavors. As I read his book it charged my adrenaline with nitroglycerine excitement, because I saw how every great challenge this man took upon himself, no matter how exasperating and momentous the struggle might have appeared, he conquered each mountain. When I finished the portion of the book where he described all the challenges he faced in such a short period of his life, I had to quickly place the book down… Continue reading

It might sound weird to you, but every single day I am caught in the grip of wonder at God’s inspiring miracles and out-of-the-blue surprises. When Sandy and I got married 39 years ago, we believed God to supply a home for us to live in as newlyweds. Two days before our wedding a small apartment was provided for us, this was our first miracle, but God was setting us up for a real surprise. Continue reading

Last Sunday I was invited to go over to Sister Clara’s home after church.  (It is important that I tell this story in the following manner because to visit Sister Clara in her private quarters was always an honor for me.)  She was one of the first people to be saved at the church that I now pastor, the Voice of Pentecost in San Francisco, under my mother’s ministry back in the late 60′s when I was just eleven years old.  Of course at that time Sis. Clara was taller than I and I was taught at an early age to respect her much like I did my grandmother, Nana, who was Sister Clara’s mentor. As I grew up, both of these stately women watched over my crazy childhood.  As a matter of fact, just weeks ago, Sister Clara shared stories about seeing me playing radical imaginary games with my imaginary playmates.  One time she caught me sword-fighting in the church with a thousand enemy troops, and when a busybody saint tried to tell her I was crazy, she just laughed and said, “No, Richard has got a healthy imagination that the Lord is developing and will use one day.”   Continue reading

iTunes has a list of their best-selling pop music singles.  A few weeks ago the Lord told me to listen to the songs on the top twenty list.  From the list God identified seventeen songs containing messages that the Lord is sending to the youth of the world.  This really blew my mind because as a pastor of a church in San Francisco I questioned whether God could really speak through popular hit music.  Well, then the Lord reminded me of one of my favorite gospel songs written by a good friend Lanny Wolfe, “Jesus Be The Lord Of All.”  Man, this song really touches me and I remember how moved my spirit was the first time I heard Lanny and his group sing it. As I sang those words “Jesus Be The Lord Of All”, the Lord asked me, “Do you really believe that the words of this song can come to pass?  Can I be the Lord of all of pop music?”   I answered God that it is a dream that He would be, but it seems so impossible because it seems like dark forces constantly show up in pop music.  Instead of questioning God any more on the subject I obediently got my iPhone and went to iTunes to look at their current pop list of singles.  From the top twenty list the Lord spoke to me to download seventeen of the songs that He said were carrying messages to the youth of the world from Him.  Wow, this was incredible! In order to understand the subject that I am about to discuss in this blog it is important for you to allow me to turn your understanding upside down for just a few minutes, because as you understand these spiritual principles the natural understanding established in your carnal mind will be attacked. The Apostle James mentions in the letter attributed to him, “Consider it a sheer gift, friends, when tests and challenges come at you from all sides.” Already in this statement James is telling us to turn our thinking upside down. Instead of thinking that tests and challenges are problems, he wants us to approach these annoying difficulties not only as a gift, but even more dramatically as a “sheer gift” according to the Message Bible. The word “sheer” is a dramatic term that implies the gift is not in response to anything, but is a completely bountiful, benevolent and undeserved gift. Now, when you look at it in that light it should really get your attention. What James is trying to get us to understand is that the things we consider problems and pressure points are actually benevolent situations that can be used to our advantage. The next verse even takes this message further, “You know that under pressure, your faith-life is forced into the open and shows its true colors.” The key words are “under pressure.” This gives us insight into the positive results that tests and challenges bring to us because they put pressure on our faith. When your faith is experiencing pressure, then you have an ability to regulate, observe and adjust your personal faith levels. Wow! This is an incredibly valuable skill to perfect in your personal life. Continue reading

A few weeks ago, when Rocki and Misty were leading worship in A Place To Meet Jesus, Misty said this:  “We need to go back to the ruby red slippers and remember that there is no place like home.” I added her quote to one of the downloads I listen to in worship and I have been mulling over the statement since she said it.  I have realized how powerful her message is, and that I feel all of us who want change need to first understand that it all begins at home.  This is so contrary to many voices in the world that say the way to get ahead is to leave home and go to some place far away.  But I have found that God really works with what is around us.  Let’s look at the big picture for a few minutes…  Continue reading
