Addressing the Golf Ball: How the Holy Spirit Addresses Us

I had the craziest revelation when God had told my son, Sunny, that we should go out to the golf range & shoot a bucket of balls. My son and I have been so involved in our work that we haven’t played golf in over two years. I felt it might be best to do some practice shooting. When I got ready to swing the golf club, and hit the first yellow ball across the practice range, the Lord said, “Notice that the ball does not address you, but instead, you have to address the ball.”

What this means, for non-golfers, is that the golfer cannot move the ball in order to hit it better, or more conveniently. He must position his body to send the golf ball in the proper direction and drop into the cup. God’s message to me in this simple metaphor was that the Holy Spirit positions itself so that wherever and whenever he finds you, he will release the appropriate word (hitting the ball), that will send you in the best direction for you to reach the high calling that is in Christ Jesus.

This is a pretty stunning revelation about the operation of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is like a dove; no wonder the apostle Paul warned, “Quench not the Holy Spirit”. The Holy Spirit is a complete gentleman. He does not speak of Himself, but only does what the Father tells Him. This characteristic is so phenomenal, because it displays God’s flexibility and willingness to get into any position to get you out of trouble, no matter how much effort it causes Heaven. Wow, Wow, Wow!

I am constantly blown away by the flexibility of God’s presence, and of course, this flexibility can also cause conflict with casual observers who might be completely inflexible. The Holy Spirit did not mind entering the body of a donkey and prophesying through the donkey’s mouth to the prophet Balaam, who was in disobedience. The Holy Spirit did not care what people thought about Him using the donkey as a mouthpiece; He truly is completely selfless in His ability to get in whatever position it takes to get you going the right direction. But there is, of course, another element that is important in the spiritual equation of prophetic words. You, the ball, must give the Holy Spirit access to your “sweet spot”. To a golfer, this is where the ball is hit by the balanced center of the club. But to us, who walk in the spirit, this is when our hearts & attitudes are completely opened to receive the fresh word of God, right in the center of our hearts–or should I say our “sweet spot”.

There is one method that works for me in giving the Holy Spirit access to my sweet spot; that is the action of pouring myself out. Sometimes this is the act of giving your last dollar, or confessing your faults. I could mention a shopping list of items, and each one of them is an act of flushing one’s heart of all self-will. You do that, and God will hit you in the center of your heart’s sweet spot.

Notice next time that you receive a prophetic word how totally pertinent that word is to where you are in time and place, and how important it is for you to act on that word immediately. James put it this way, that faith without works is dead, be it alone. So now your journey begins. The Holy Spirit is swinging down on your ball, addressing perfectly your sweet spot, so that you will go flying into His perfect will.
