Twenty years ago God made a covenant with me that if I would get up and pray every morning at 4:00 am, He would do something special in my life. Wow! That covenant comes with incredible benefits. Over the past 19 years I’ve had an incredible array of experiences. Each experience came through a “pray and obey” format, but I am amazed at the shift that has been occurring over the last year.

The first thing that God told me to do, that was out of the ordinary, was when I was planning a crusade in Liberia in the middle of the monsoon rain season. The stadium was outdoors and we had booked it at the worst time of the whole year. Of course, I was not aware of this mistake. When the local missionaries called and warned me of the mistake, God spoke to me very clearly to keep the dates, and that He would stop the rain. This was the first public test of my ability to hear God’s voice. I had crusade posters printed up and sent throughout the country announcing the crusade, and that God was going to stop the rain. God was true to His word, but the rain did not stop until 55 minutes before the crusade was to begin, and then the rain started back up at the end of the altar call. This continued for four nights in a row.

The next time God spoke to me with an extraordinary command was when He had told me to close my church down for forty days and to pray a blessing on every home in the city of San Francisco. We left door hangers on the doors of every home in San Francisco, (260 thousand homes). Words like this from God felt good to me because they were clever, they fell in line with my normal rational thinking and I could observe and tabulate the results of obedience nearly immediately.

As the years progressed, God began to move me into a more intense place of prayer and sometimes His commands shocked me and caused me to reverse my mode of operation. In the year 2002, after spending an intense time of prayer leading up to our Christian movie company’s 7th anniversary, I was shocked when God gave me a stunning message. Our company was in final contract negotiations with Sky Angel to do a 24 hour channel of Christian programming. I arrived at work one day to discover that my grip department head’s wife, who was about to give birth, found out her baby had gone breach. Ten minutes later I received a call that my sister was vomiting uncontrollably in the hospital, and this had gone on for a 10 hour period. Within the same hour I was told that our Christian School Vice Principal’s youngest son had just died. These events were so devastating to me that I literally fell on my knees in the office lobby and cried out before the Lord. God’s message as radical to me as these events that had just occurred. God said that our company was a type of the Laodicean church and since that we were neither hot or cold, He would vomit us out of His mouth and He counseled us to buy of the gold that is tried in the fire, and that if we were to continue on the path that we were going that we would only create another televangelist broadcast station similar to all others that had gone before. He wanted us to lead, and not to take a lukewarm or backwards role. The commands that He had given to me during that time were so radical that some of them have taken years to be fulfilled, but it they include 14 inventions that will have a high impact on the movie industry. If you would like more information about the inventions, you can check other internet sources, but for the purposes of this article I am desiring to tell you how your prayer life can dramatically change as you get closer to the Lord.

This last year the Lord told me to quit praying at 4:00 am, and my prayer life, done mostly during the day, began to take on a whole different dimension. Suddenly, at the beginning of 2008, God has begun consistently waking me up at 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning. This has been consistent every night. I know that it is the Lord, so I stumble out of the bed, usually go to the bathroom, and then walk into the living room. I want you to know that at this point I am dead tired and there is no way I feel like praying, no way that I feel like doing anything but going back to sleep. So, usually I’ll sit in a chair with absolutely nothing on my mind, and begin speaking in other tongues. Amazingly, I will suddenly have stunning words given to me that are so simple but yet so profound that I hardly know what to do with them. It really came to a head two nights ago when the Lord woke me up at 1:30 am and I physically asked the Lord out loud, “Why am I here and what is going on?” After about two hours He spoke to me and said, “During the day your mind is too busy. I have so much to share with you, but you are not ready to receive it because your mind is always so busy. You must learn to have a completely quiet mind so you can receive the fullness of what I am trying to show you. At about 4:00 am the same morning I went back to bed and was suddenly in a REM dream state. I was arguing and fighting with God about our company’s website. God began proposing ways of doing our website that seemed so hoaky to my carnal mind that I was angry and started yelling at God, and the Lord yelled back, “Why don’t you listen to my simple instructions.” This arguing went on for a long time until finally I felt that God was choking me and I could not breathe. Suddenly I woke up and gasped for air and
the Lord said, “Now create the website “wysiwyghome.com“.

The thing that amazes me is that, as I get closer to the Lord, I discover how different He is. His ways are so much higher than mine, and to think that years ago I believed God and I thought exactly alike. The Lord is quite amazing. I am sure that many of you have already discovered this phenomenon in God, but I have also found that there are some that, as they get close to the Lord, draw back because they discover how unique and out of the ordinary God’s commands can be. Of course, I need not mention those Christians who won’t follow God unless He fits into their own traditional religious boxes.

Well, in my world God is so out of my box and so contrary to my paradigm that I have fallen totally, ridiculously and hopelessly in love with Him. My heart is so ravished by the everyday experience of finding His fresh and new commands waiting for me, that I can only say: “I am love-sick”.
